In September 1979, the Institute of brackish water desalination of Gansu Academy of Sciences was set up. In 1981, the first brackish water desalination test site was established in China; in 1984, the first membrane development base was established in China and the Gansu Provincial Microporous Membrane Science and Technology Development Company was established; in May 1984, it was renamed the Gansu Provincial Institute of Membrane Science and Technology, under the leadership of the Gansu Provincial Science and Technology Commission. In 1986, the State Planning Commission established the China Lanzhou Membrane Research Experimental Base in Gansu Research Institute of Membrane Science and Technology. In the same year, as the executing unit of the Chinese side, it completed the China-Australia intergovernmental cooperation project "Water Desalination Project". In January 1991, it was combined with LAN-STAR chemical cleaning company of China. In December 1992, it was disintegrated with LAN-STAR chemical cleaning company of China. In August 1996, it was renamed the Gansu membrane science and Technology Research Institute and headed by the Gansu provincial science and Technology Commission. In January 2006, it was transformed into a scientific and technological enterprise and headed by the Gansu provincial science and technology department. In November 2017, the company was restructured into a limited company, renamed Gansu Provincial Institute of Membrane Science and Technology Limited, under the leadership of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of Gansu Province. Gansu Provincial Institute of Membrane Science and Technology is the earliest specialized institution engaged in membrane science and technology research in China. Now it is the executive director unit of China Membrane Industry Association, the executive director unit of China Seawater Desalination and Water Reuse Association, the executive director unit of China Water Conservancy Enterprise Association Desalination Branch, and the industrial energy saving and cleaning in China. Production director unit, Gansu Province Environmental Protection Industry Association member unit, Gansu Province Chemistry Association executive director unit, Lanzhou Water Science and Technology Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance member unit, Lanzhou Jiaotong University Master's Joint Training Base, Gansu Province Key Research Institute Capacity Building Unit, Gansu Province Membrane Separation Technology Creation The research and development platform of Gansu Membrane Separation Industry Technology Center, Gansu Membrane Separation Engineering Technology Research Center, Gansu Water Treatment Technology Productivity Promotion Center, Gansu Rural Drinking Water Safety Engineering Research Center, Gansu Membrane Water Treatment Engineering Research Center, etc. will be jointly developed with Lanzhou University in 2015. The "Advanced Water Treatment Application Technology Joint Laboratory" will be built in 2016 to create a space for water treatment technology specialization in Gansu Province. Gansu Research Institute of Membrane Science and Technology is committed to the research and development of membrane separation technology. It has made many advanced and mature achievements in membrane preparation and membrane separation technology development, such as reverse osmosis, nanofiltration, ultrafiltration, packed electrodialysis, air sterilization and filtration.
