Kava kawain - anti-inflammatory, calming and soothing
Kava is a plant of the pepper genus that grows in western Polynesia (Tonga, Samos, Fiji, Vanuatu) and Tahiti. The term can also refer to a traditional fermented drink made by grinding the roots of kava peppers with a hammer or a juglet and then soaking them in water. The resulting drink has strong calming properties and has been used in a religious ceremony for hundreds of years (according to Captain Cook's first description of the ceremony in 1875).
Preparations of kava roots and leaves are still used in Oceania to prepare a variety of traditional medicines for the treatment of urinary diseases, rheumatic diseases, respiratory diseases, intestinal and gastric diseases, pulmonary disorders and various skin diseases.
The active ingredient of kawa root is bisunsaturated a-pyranone, including Kawain/dihydrokawain/dihydromethystiein /yangonin/desmetoxy-yangonin.
Kava root also contains small amounts of essential oils and flavonoids.
Kawain is an antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent.
In Europe, kava is getting a lot of attention. It is designated for use in the treatment of sleep disorders, anxiety and bladder irritation.
The root or stem of PipermethysticumG.Forst was used as the raw material of kava extract, and kava lactone was the main active ingredient.
